Commentary

I’m terrible at leaving comments. I’m worse for demanding others do. Duel standards are a bitch.

My email is up the creek, for some reason. Random messages seem to have never made it as far as my mail box. This apparently is a problem with sacrifice (my mail server), rather than the hosting box. Very strange. So if you’ve sent me a message and it looks like I’m being an insensitive jerk, I have an excuse this time 🙂

Afphrid is back. The Alt.Fan.pratchett database of relationships is an odd beast, and my first major PHProject, The new version is a little better coded, a little more robust, and has gained two major bug reports in it’s first 12 hours. But for doing it, I got kudos, and kudos meant I spent the day improving it. FWIW, the messaging system exists (well, the structure and the viewing ability, just not the filing, deleting, replying or sending) but cliques is undergoing a rethink.

Today was spent not doing IRC.

Various displacement activities were done as a reaction to this, like sorting out /home/aquarion/, repairing and patching Forever, catching up on diaries, fiction, games and news. Like Designing, planning, posting and documenting, commenting, film watching and installing Jabberd.

But mostly it was to not be on IRC, because it’s become a place I don’t want to be right now. It’s taken over the server, the channels I’m normally on, not too mention far too much bandwidth in LiveJournals and diaries, so I’ve abandoned the entire thing for a while, and I sincerly hope that everyone involved in it lives happily ever after.

In the meantime, I’m still around by email, I’ll get my ICQ client working again, and maybe even start up a channel those who have to IRC can get to me on another channel, far away. It may be a week, last time I did this it was an entire month to return to the wasteland where the channel once was. I’m not going to talk about why, because enough has already been said.

There is more fiction, it was writen August last year, but I didn’t upload it. It’s called text and it’s depressing.

Yes, I’m sinking into depression again, which is bad, but stuff is happening, which is good. With any luck stuff will happen to enable Project Geekhouse to happen fully.

Redundant Array of Inexpressive Diarynotes

Under the heading of “Yay” does not come people splitting off into new channels because the old ones are too fluffy, so I’m now back to considering leaving irc.lspace for a while so all this blows over. That’s what I did last time I was on a server that was splitting, and I came back to find it was dead. Maybe if I stay, I can stop it happening, but unless either side is prepared to back down even *slightly* #afp is going to devolve into #spiky and #fluffy, or whatever they end up being. I’ve been trying to express my POV on this, and it’s been either ignored or misunderstood, so I’m giving up. How good a fucking writer am I who can’t even put my own words down properly, what chance do I have with my characters?

I’m bored of the “how crude can we go today” topics, but I’m equally bored of the “It ain’t what it used to be” arguments. Until I can put better words down, I’ll leave it at that.

It doesn’t help that I’ve been in a ratty mood all day. It’s impossible to work in this room, both because it’s my bedroom and therefore a place of “play”, and equally because I keep being interrupted by brethren, phones, or some other fuck witted distraction. For the sake of my sanity, and the sake of finishing things and therefore getting paid, I have to move out. Soon. Either to Project Geekhouse, or to my own flat (…which would delay PG by at least three months…).

I need to get some writing done, I think. I just don’t know how, or what to write. I have a world, characters, I just need a plot.

Oh, I got AHBOU‘d again (Thanks James 🙂

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or g.

Type 'help;' or 'h' for help. Type 'c' to clear the buffer

mysql> drop table users;

The above is not an actual transaction.

But it’s close

My automatic reaction when logging into mysql on geekstuff (where Aquarionics is) is to use mysql -p klind (Launch MySQL with the database klind, prompt for password), And then, in a fit of fuckwittery the world was unprepared for, I forgot I was using the klind database, assumed I was using the one I *should* have been using, and dropped users in favour of the new data structure.

In fact, I had already installed the new data structure, so I assumed that it had worked, and the first thing I knew of the new problem was when LoneCat asked me why she couldn’t get to her diary. Then I screamed

So, less than a week after I launched it to the general public, and after 34 users, the user list has been wiped, You’ll need to get new accounts.

All stories are authorless for the time being, at some point I will put a system in to “reclaim” episodes. Sorry. I am now in the process of making the backup scripts work on this server.

Be assured that I am not a happy bunny with myself over this.

IRC

This I’m not happy about. It boils down to the following: (This is mho, it is only valid now, and only for this channel. Null where void)

Idling on channel for many hours when away is bad

Enforcing this with less than a days warning is worse, especially when this ruling is no longer in the MOTD of one server, but justifiable

Kicking people who have ops because the bots are being unstable is stupid

The constant “How crude can we get” topic wars can be irritating, but…

…trying to force a channel full of people to have the same entertainment standards as you is impossible. At least the topic wasn’t locked this time.

Kicking on auto-idle (after due warning) is a solution, I don’t agree with kicking those who have ops (because of the above reasoning) at all, but that is ccooke’s decision, and I will abide by it

Finally,
I have seen channels be ripped apart by wars over “how fluffy is #(.*)” and battles over what ops are/do. If two people are having an argument, take it to query. If you don’t like this channel, or this channel and accepted behaviors don’t like yours, find a new one. Or make one. IRC, as run on #AFP, is a monachy. We have a person in charge, lesser people who are normal but have control, and everyone else. Nobody – with the exception of the person put in charge of the operation – has the right to say what does and doesn’t happen here.

I will fight for afp, and I will lose, and I will find somewhere else. But I won’t like it

Don't go into politics

Apparently, according to Political Compass I’m a left-leaning liberal. As it says here. Fun.

A few updates then, since I’m bored. Still househunting, still job-seeking (although there is a nice lead on a 10 week webdesign contract, which would be cool) still wishing for a faster connection. Still waiting for Woody to be released so that I can get the CD or DVD or something and re-install the server. Trying to get to Durham for the Goodbye Mary meet on the 8th, and other such fun things.

Forever seems to be populer, and I’ve been asked to release the source, so I might just get a more independant version out sometime soon. Until then, I’m off tomorrow for a Eurovision meet, which should be fun, and will have lonecat there. Coolness.

Have a great weekend 🙂

Forever

Judging by yesterday’s reaction, I should whine more often. I get more reaction that way… 🙂

More new stuff, and mega new stuff at that. I have taken the great leap forward, and opened up the Aquarionics Accounts system for the public to join. You too can now have an account on Aquarionics. It doesn’t get you email, it doesn’t get you chicks, but it does get you a sense of wellbeing and a warm glow… But beware, the new member form is possibly kinda flakey, it’s only there so people can get accounts for…

I look around my home directory, and I see a folder. It is not a small folder, it is not a dainty folder, it is labled Projects, and is a graveyard of all the things I’ve never had time to finish. In it is the short-story archiving site, the long-term plans for NSD, Nomical (the first version), Even going back to the universe in which Project ANN never came out of, and I saw an idea filed under “things to learn PHP with”. It was a continuous story, in the vein of the addventure, but in PHP and MySQL.

To cut a long story shorter, I’ve coded it, you will need an Aquarionics Account to write entries, but you have one of those already, don’t you? No? Get one then. And then go on to

Livejournal

Happiness is someone elses thoughts. I’ve been writing all evening, so it looks like you’re going to get a full diary entry as well as the new story.

I’ve been catching up on diaries, most of which are on Livejournal, because for the last couple of weeks I’ve been too wraped up in my own lack of life to bother about other peoples. Sorry. The only person to have any idea of it is Liz, who accidentally caught the tail end of this depression in query a couple of days ago, It’s nothing new, just futility of existance and the fact that nothing is really happening.

But I digress.

I confess that of the multitude of diaries I link to, the only ones I really stay current with are the ones to the right (Most of which, you’ll notice, aren’t really actually diaries) and about half the list of links (Liz, Ruthi, Rachel, Sam, this means you, plus others). And all of the pure diaries I do keep up to date with are on LJ, however, this gives me Kid-inna-window syndrome. Standing in the snow, gazing though the glass at the party going on inside, because all of the Livejournals are interlinked, and commented on each other, and everything. I really shouldn’t complain, because you may have noticed the small group of sites that seem remarkably similer, but the fact that most of my friends are sitting inside their cozy LiveHaven whilst I’m out in the street hasn’t escaped me.

I also find it really facinating that the “add comment” page has gathered 12664 reloads since febuary, whilst there have only ever been 260 odd comments made.
So am I going to pack up my archives and move to LJ? Doubt it. I’ve spent too long writing this website to abandon it. I could make Aquarionics some kind of diary community for friends, but then they’d have the same thing with their friends in LJ as I do with the large proportion of mine.

I suppose it’s another audience thing, the site gathers 200 unique visitors every day, which even given dynamic IPs is not too bad. Someone out there must be reading this shit, and it seems like everyone else is getting some kind of feedback.

Maybe I should get an LJ, then I can find out if I’m on Rachel’s List or not.

Sorry for ranting.

Send in the clones

So I went to see Attack of the Clones.

And I prepared to slate it

And I discovered I couldn’t, because it wasn’t terrible. And Jar-Jar Binks is quite possibly responsible for the complete destruction of The Republic, And Christopher Lee is great, and… and…

And Moth says it far better and I’m going to, so go read his review
