Dark Light
  • 06:00 – Awake from the dreamy dream land that has been my happy home for the last eight hours to hear that Mandelson has been appointed to the EU. Wish I’d stayed asleep.
  • 07:30 – Arise, krakken like, from the depths of my room. Shower, break fast, put my stuff together for work. Wish I’d stayed in bed.
  • 08:00 – Turn on my mobile, to discover that I missed a call from the Local Council yesterday because my crappy mobile decided to run out of batteries. Resolve to do something about this as soon as I possibly can.
  • 09:00 – Discover that the County Council has only just heard of my claim for housing beneifit due to unemployment, despite my giving it in to the Job Centre in early June. The local council don’t want to do my claim now because it’s late. Convince them. Resolve to firebomb the job centre.
  • 09:15 – Tip contents of shoulderbag into rucksack and cycle into town.
  • 09:30 – Swap library books (Rebus 11 (Standard Ian Rankin, nice crime story) & Angry Young Spaceman (Starts well, good ideas, falls apart completely and annoyingly at the end) for The Frumious Bandersnatch (With a title like that how could I refuse?) and Alfred Hitchcock in the Vertigo Murders (Hitchcock stars in a murder mystery novel. Wierd))
  • 09:45 – decide that if I’m already late, I could do something about my phone.
  • 11:15 – Come out of the phone shop with a new contract (I pick up the new 3G phone tomorrow. 3 month free line rental (3 month half price from 3, 3 month other half price from phones4u – who were really exceedingly good and helpful. I seem to alternate between Helpful and Really Useless for p4u shops (One of the side points of my moving around is that I’ve never renewed my contract in the same p4u shop two years running: Sunderland, London, Tunbridge Wells, Cambridge, Reading and now Letchworth). Took bloody ages though, some kind of problem with the stock sourcing computer.
  • 11:20 – realise I’ve left my season ticket in my shoulderbag. debate going home to get it.
  • 11:25 – buy YPR off-peak ticket to London Kings Cross, condemming me to be in London until 19:00
  • 12:30 – Get to work. Buy bagel. I’ve earnt it.
