I’m now using “RionAqua” as an AIM/iChat account. Anyone with the old account should probably add the new one instead.
Since I’ve had my new camera-phone, I’ve been taking random shots occasionally. After a fairly brief stint using Gallery and moblog.co.uk I’ve done my usual thing of writing an Epistula Module to do it a) the way I want it, and b) within my own site. (I started off adapting the webcam module, but that’s bitrotted slightly and was never very good, so I rewrote a whole new thing that uses EXIF data – which my mobile doesn’t do, but my full camera does – and pretty CSS effects.
Anyway, the upshots of this are that to the left on the front page is “That Which Is Seen”, the latest moblog picture, and clicking on it will take you to /moblog, an archive of everything. I need to make the archiving better and make it generate thumbnails properly, but for now this end is working. Next end is the python script to take a piped email and send the graphic and caption to the right places, then I’ll fix the front end properly. Meanwhile, it’s half one and I have work in the morning…
So, first we have a post that LoneCat sent me from the LJ Community “Mock The Stupid”, The Fool, the Cigarette and the O2 Canisters . This is so incredibly bad I can’t believe it. For example:
I see “the King of the Idiots” calming smoking a cigarette while sitting next to a sleeping old woman in a wheel chair, who coincidentally happens to have two tanks of oxygen strapped to the back which she is breathing out of. TWITCH
Somehow I manage to fight my natural survival instinct to flee long enough to say (perhaps a tad loudly)
“Sir, you CAN NOT smoke in here. Put that out NOW.”
He looks at me, blinks, and says, “Why should I?”
I respond with, “Put the cigarette OUT and I will tell you.” (At this time two of my coworkers have been drawn by the smell, and the alarm in my voice and so now there are three of us standing in the doorway and another running down the hall to call security)
So “Belligerent Boy” begrudgingly stabs out the offending smoke on the floor, right next to Granny’s oxygen tank, and leaves the still smoldering butt there. My co-worker Tim rushes over scoops up the potential fuse and dumps it in the sink.
I proceed to explain that since this is a Hospital (i.e. a Sterile Environment) and due to the fact the he is sitting next to two tanks of highly flammable material that could make a good sized crater outta the waiting area, and that there are sprinkler heads/smoke alarms and posted no smoking signs Basically smoking is not allowed.
His response: “Not good enough, honey.” as he takes out another smoke and lights it
It gets worse from there. Now Read On
Less life threateningly stupid, but more traditionally funny, I play NationStates occasionally (Currently as “The Most Serene Republic of Avenue X” in the West Pacific) and got a telegram from someone inviting me to their Really And Most Sincerely Gothic Clan, which was all very well, but it signed off with the following:
[B]ut beware of our evil mistress. Lady Kitty runs the place, and she is pure bread vampire.
Pure bread vampire. That could be fun, I mean, you’d have to kill them with Garlic Bread, I suppose.
Of course, the most Gothic of Sincerly Gothic Bread Vampire clans would have to be the terrible and most truely evil clan of all: The Risen.
So, we replaced my desktop machine at work with a laptop. In this case, a P3, 512mb, Radeon, WinXP laptop. It’s nice. It runs Warcraft.
I use the SSH Tunnel Client from Delight which is an interface to Putty, basically, that lets you set up and manage SSH tunnels easily. More usefully, it allows you to group tunnels together, so I have a series grouped as “From Home” and “From Work” that set up IRC, IMAP & CVS in such a way that my laptop doesn’t care where it is. (The Delight website is in furrin, but the software isn’t)
The Firefox Bookmarks Syncroniser keeps my FireFox Bookmarks synced between the laptop and the home desktop.
I wish I could do the same with my FireFox & Thunderbird profiles, but I can’t yet
It duel boots into Debian occasionally, but not often. This is mostly because I’m a windows developer at the moment. The system runs WAMP (Windows/Apache/MySQL/PHP), so I can do all my development work without touching the dev server (Not always a good thing, since the dev server is one major revision of PHP and a few minor revisions of MySQL behind the laptop).
Things that annoy me about it include iTunes. I like iTunes lots, but I can’t tell it that I have three media libraries. One on the Laptop, one that’s available when connected to water.gkhs, and one that’s available only for internal.browserangel. That would be useful. Not as useful as being able to remove duplicates from the media library (which there are huge numbers of tools to do, all written in AppleScript), but useful all the same.
Been playing the Evil Genius demo, made by the one of the original designers of Theme Park and in the same mold as that and Dungeon Keeper. It’s Great.
Also – and you may be able to tell this – been playing Transport Tycoon Deluxe again. I found the CD, then discovered it was quicker to download it from eDonkey (Where it has a Magic Patch that makes it work with XP) than get it working straight. Yay Internet.
The reason for this nostalgia was that Chris Sawyer is releasing the sequel to TTDX – Locomotion – in about a week, and it looks really quite nice. It’s far from the only game I want that’s coming out soon, which means this month will have to be one of Will Power and Determination
