The above is not an actual transaction.

But it’s close

My automatic reaction when logging into mysql on geekstuff (where Aquarionics is) is to use mysql -p klind (Launch MySQL with the database klind, prompt for password), And then, in a fit of fuckwittery the world was unprepared for, I forgot I was using the klind database, assumed I was using the one I *should* have been using, and dropped users in favour of the new data structure.

In fact, I had already installed the new data structure, so I assumed that it had worked, and the first thing I knew of the new problem was when LoneCat asked me why she couldn’t get to her diary. Then I screamed

So, less than a week after I launched it to the general public, and after 34 users, the user list has been wiped, You’ll need to get new accounts.

All stories are authorless for the time being, at some point I will put a system in to “reclaim” episodes. Sorry. I am now in the process of making the backup scripts work on this server.

Be assured that I am not a happy bunny with myself over this.

IRC

This I’m not happy about. It boils down to the following: (This is mho, it is only valid now, and only for this channel. Null where void)

Idling on channel for many hours when away is bad

Enforcing this with less than a days warning is worse, especially when this ruling is no longer in the MOTD of one server, but justifiable

Kicking people who have ops because the bots are being unstable is stupid

The constant “How crude can we get” topic wars can be irritating, but…

…trying to force a channel full of people to have the same entertainment standards as you is impossible. At least the topic wasn’t locked this time.

Kicking on auto-idle (after due warning) is a solution, I don’t agree with kicking those who have ops (because of the above reasoning) at all, but that is ccooke’s decision, and I will abide by it

Finally,
I have seen channels be ripped apart by wars over “how fluffy is #(.*)” and battles over what ops are/do. If two people are having an argument, take it to query. If you don’t like this channel, or this channel and accepted behaviors don’t like yours, find a new one. Or make one. IRC, as run on #AFP, is a monachy. We have a person in charge, lesser people who are normal but have control, and everyone else. Nobody – with the exception of the person put in charge of the operation – has the right to say what does and doesn’t happen here.

I will fight for afp, and I will lose, and I will find somewhere else. But I won’t like it
