CCDE Was Fun with a capital F. I got into Supersoaker fights, I collected more water than the average resovior (It’s the Aqua-Factor 🙂 I drank and spent far too much, and met a whole host of beautiful and/or interesting people. I got things signed, I met new friends, and I gathered ideas for finally writing a percentage of my Story.

As you can see, the Search Box is now back, the site is in bloom, It’s summer and new ideas are on the way.

Updates and stuff happening tonight, and I’ll probably post again then 🙂

Sir? Are you listening?

Mr Merlin?

Simon shook his head.

"Yes? Sorry, I was miles away."
Millions of miles away, he thought.

"I was saying that we have just
got the final specifications for the SHTK Standard from the W3C"
said Kay.

"And?" Asked Simon,

"I’m afraid there is little
change. It is impossible for us to add many more features to the
system unless we improve upon this standard." she replied.

"A, Impossible is not in our
dictionary; and b, we keep to the standard" said Simon, reciting
in a few words what the company ethos did in several thousands. It
was quite literally true as well, The ashes of the relevant page were
framed on the wall behind Simon’s desk.

"If we start making our own
standards simply because we think we know best, we are going to lose
our main consumer base".

This was true as well, Merlin Tech’s
main customers were the types of people who attempted to rebel
against software producers who tried to enter markets and take them
over. Merlin’s strategy was to create programs that conformed to
standards precisely and with backward compatibility, so a document
created in Textra 98 could still be read in version 2, but without
the extra special effects added in the latest version.

This was a revelation to the industry.
The problem was that the general public stuck to it’s own, familiar
brands and Merlin Tech could not break into that sector without
applying some of the unethical tactics of the other companies, Which
the CEO, Simon Merlin, refused to do.

They could call it an Impasse, if that
hadn’t been on the same page as Impossible.

What is a CCDE?

This is a question I have been asked a few times this past few weeks, mainly due to the little thing above which mentions it.

It is also a question I myself wonder at. The Official answer is the Clarecraft Discworld Event, it is to be held in Woolpit, Suffolk, The UK, on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this week. It is a meeting and party for all fans across the country, and indeed the world, for fans of the books, works, teachings and teachests of mr Terry Pratchett, writer of books.

That is all.Here me!

Life is getting interesting.

Or not. as the case may be.

As mentioned below, it looks as though I am heading back to Sunderland Uni for another year. This is a problem, mainly because I have no place to live in Sunderland. Money, as always, is going to be a danger. The aim of the exercise in this case is to get as much as I can off the state and dip as lightly into my emergancy savings as I can. This means I need a job, which in turn means I have to find somewhere who will employ me for two weeks of August, let me have two weeks holiday, and then employ me for another two weeks ’til Uni. Doesn’t seem likly, really, so I am staying with designing the websites.

Meanwhile, I can sit here playing with the latest technoloy. If you look at the end of this post, there are three icons instead of the usual two, The one on the right is Linkme, which is a hard link to this entry, middle is Mailme, to send mail to me, and the left-hand speech-bubble is a brand new feature. Basically, it will take you to a Real Audio streaming media clip of me reading this entry. You will need Realplayer installed (and there are now versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, so I don’t feel guilty) which you can get by clicking the relivant icon on the left, and you will hear me in full mono sound 🙂

Ok, the quality is poor, the file sizes are about 100k each, which, even from the crapness that is the Aquarionics server, should stream fairly well. The only problem comes if I get 2000 people trying to access it at once. And that, my friends, is unlikly.

Why do I do this? Because I trained though school as a drama person, and I like to practice. More stuff soon, but I will leave you with good ole W.S, Jaques “Ages of man” speech from As You Like It:

“All the world is a stage,
and the men and women merely players,
each as their enterances and exits
and one man in his time plays many parts…”

(My FTP Server was dead as I tryed to upload this, so the image isn’t up, so to get the streaming you will have to click here, and if didn’t work, my FTP server is still dead 🙂 Oh yes, and I didn’t remember that I already had a speech bubble as an icon, so it became a speaker 🙂

Boredom is an occasional item to be dealt with when you are an unempolyed student on his Summer Holidays. Today it hit me hard 🙂

So far today I have sweapted the front path, installed two operating systems on my computer, writtian chapter one of a new short story, designed the next few episodes of Worlds Apart, changed the message on my moblie, Redid the graphics for the Portal (now it looks more like the rest of the site, grey backgrounds, white text with drop shadows, that sort of thing) and had a major argument with my brother about Logistics.

Oh yes, my little brother’s summer hols start today. Yay.

Ye gods and small furry animals, I didn’t realise it had been quite so long.

OK, Events of the past week, Lesson 101 in Life’s University:

My results from University came in. I passed everything. It was time for a stock take of my education, what do I want to do?

Some background: I passed every single GCSE exam I took, and failed every A-Level written (Excluding General Studies, which doesn’t count, and Computing, which got me half an E (it was an A/S level, and thus worth half an A-Level)

This is, as the FAQ says, because all British A-Level exams are mostly judged on Essays, and i have no illusions about my essay style.
My writing style is a problem. I have a “chatty” style. This means that I can amuse and entertain (occasionally), and that my Usenet posts, Stories, letters and this sort of thing (i.e, Blogging) are well received, but in Essay writing this style is frowned upon highly. This means I fail essays, but pass practical exams with flying colours.

If examinations were in whether or not the candidate could do what is asked, instead of writing about the doing in a manor that is pleasing to the examiner, I would pass. However, it is not. And I fail essays.

The (BTEC) Higher National Diploma (HND) I am studying now is worth less than a BSc (degree), but is measured on the ability to do the work rather than the fancy writing. This is why I continue to do well. I have the option this year of transferring to the degree course. I am not sure how good I would be in a degree, and it is highly possible that I could do this well in the HND, and then screw up the BSc totally and end up next year where I was last year, i.e, trying to find a job or a place at a(nother) uni when I have almost no qualifications. I am confidant that if I were given an interview, I could convince most uni’s to let me in, but these days all applicants are judged on statistics. and my numbers are not good.

(Working for five years as the Technical Contact for a school library, and two as the same sort of thing for an entire company seems not to be worth a hell of a lot. Experience is not looked at, numbers are)

This means I may end up absorbing the ridicule at Sunderland for another year studying the HND, on the basis that at the end of this I can use that to get a (better) place at another (better) university (which is closer to home. Though that isn’t difficult, and further from home and I would need a boat of some kind).

So now I am filling in forms for my Student Loan. Fun.

The weekend was the Paddock Wood Carnival 2000. A more mediocre event you could not possibly imagine. Even the floats this year were not very creative.

I’m failing to get anything done on Project -ANN-, the idea is there and is germinating. Lets see what happens, shall we? Other than that the Rainbow Saga is entering a new phase, I have an idea where to take it, and any day now I might post some of the chapters that didn’t make it as an idea. Worlds Apart (my David Eddings Fanfic) part 3 is also in development. I have the prologue and the ending written, and Chapter One (of 5, one of which is the ending) is onto it’s second draft. The reason I wrote the end first is to stop myself going of at a tangent. As it stands now, it just might work.

Resisting the parental wish for me to get a better, higher paid, regular, job, I am still working at TMS designing & updating websites, and telling them how the computers work. The company are also changing accounts packages at the end of the month, so I have to redo the invoices, which is good for me 🙂

I’m fine. I had to tidy my room to find my mobile, This was done by sorting everything into piles on the bed. When I did that I realised the phone must be somewhere else. Like under the bed.

Anyway, I have it now, and whether it is working after it’s brief holiday, I had better wait and see.

(yes, these links are getting more and more flaky 🙂
The ClareCraft Discworld Event is in T minus 8 days. This week I have been Designing T-Shirts, searching webpages, designing Webpages for it, collating data, knowlage, information and wisdom of what to bring. It boils down to this: Chocolate, Clothes, Water-pistols, Chocolate, Me, Money, Chocolate. The theme is Lords and Ladies, so I suppose I could find a costume and go as a witch.

Which brings me to the end of the update 🙂 *please* fill in the Poll above. It really does help 🙂

If you tried to visit me in the last couple of days, you will have discovered that the Aquarionics Server, including all FTP & Chat facilites was dead as a dodo. This, apparently, was due to a server crash.

This also applies if you attempted to send me E-Mail, it probably bounced or splatted. I cannot tell.

Nowhere has gone all festive in it’s carnival glory this weekend. I can see the big wheel from my room, and might even go on it

I am terrified of heights 🙂
