Meet & Drink
Okay, so Karen wants a meet, and damnit I do to. So:
Some weekend between the 15th of July and the 1st September, I am going to hold a UK Blog meet in central London (Probably in the Green Man, because I like it and it’s cool and serves good beer).
Now. The first weekend in August is a no-go (Because I’m somewhere else that weekend), and I’ve had this “Pick a date” problem before.
So, if you would like to come to said event, comment on this post, and note any weekends you won’t be able to make, and I’ll try to pick a date without too many people not being able to come.
(If you leave an email addy on your comment, I’ll mail you when a decision is reached. If you don’t, I won’t). So comment, people, and pass on this plan via your own weblogs :-)
Karen:
The Pete and I have many bookings, but are prepared to shuffle for a blog meet. However, we absolutely cannot do the 26/27 July, the 16/17 August, or the 30/31 August weekends, as we will be at our place in the country on those days. Oh, and 19th July and 22nd August are also out. The Green Man is a great choice, if only for sentimental reasons.
D:
Sign me up. I can’t predict what weekends will be bad for me though since I don’t even know what I’m doing this weekend.
Mark:
12/13 July would be absolutely perfect for The Mark.
Cathy:
Oh dear, I’m going to be rather demanding.
I’m on holiday from 5th July to the 20th, and in August I have a week-long business course from the 16th to the 23rd in preparation for working life next year (organised by Year In Industry – they sent me a note saying, “By the way, you’ve been enrolled on this. And make sure you turn up or we’ll fine you £70.”). I could possibly do Sunday 24th though, and any other weekends are fine.
Hopefully I’ll be able to make it to this one :)
Cathy:
Oh, and my parents have indicated that there’s a much higher possibility of me attending if it’s a daytime meet rather than an eveningish one.
Vaughan:
Yes! Blogmeet! Yes! Erm, weekends. Don’t know as yet. I’d like to have the sort of life where my weekends are planned weeks in advance, but I don’t. Desolate social wasteland, and all that. Which means that I should be able to make most dates, but would probably find out only at the last moment that I can’t. Whatever. And Green Man, yes. I can stagger home from there in one tube journey, which is always a bonus.
mike:
The Mike would love, love, LOVE to come down, but is fairly severely restricted. He can only manage:
July 25/26
August 1 (at a push)
August 22/23
August 30
Gert:
I can’t do the weekends of 9, 16, 23 August. As I’m also unlikely to do Saturday evenings or Sunday afternoons, please don’t work round my dates.
Th’other half once said he didn’t like me giving up our Saturday nights for blogmeets, so if it’s one of those and someone can come up with a convincing lie for me, I might even buy them a drink!
The Gert:
I’ve just remembered that the weekend of 6 September is out, too. The fairly minor matter of my little brother getting married!
zed:
zed would love to try and make it. it depends on where zed’s kids are at the time and whether zed has any money at all. zed will try.
The Gordon:
Second weekend in August?
Not that it really matters as I doubt I’ll be able to get down for it, but hey, if ya don’t ask..
Gordon the Blog meet virgin (be gentle with me)
Timothy G:
Any day; we unemployed are FREE AS A BIRD.
Looking forward to it.
-Tim, another Blogmeet virgin
Jann:
I’d like to come out and play, too. Although August would be bad. No-one babysits in August.
Jann:
Just to try and keep up with Gert. My sister gets married on the same weekend. In the South of France, ner.
Daisy:
Daisy would love to be the sort of person who could come but she knows that she would rather saw off both big toes and shove them up her left nostril than go meet a group of new people so she hopes that everyone has a great time and posts plenty of reports and/or pictures.
Stuart:
So far, Sat 23 Aug is my only non-negotiable non-available date. Possibly Sat 30 Aug will become unavailable as we frequently take a holiday during the final week of August, but that’s not worth planning around at this stage.
Also for the record – though I know it’s just outside your specified time period – Sat 12 Jul is not good. I tried going to an afternoon/evening blogmeet after a lunchtime drinking session once before and I’m still trying to blot out the memories.
The Fridays preceding these dates are fine, with the possible exception of 29 Aug. Sundays are the Lord’s day and therefore completely out of the question. (Yes, this is a feeble, faux-pious attempt to avoid a Monday morning hangover, but I’m sure that no one will notice.)
dvd:
i’d like to come along too, if that’s okay with everyone.
19th july and first two weekends in august are the only ones i can’t make.
Paul :
I’d love to attend a UK Blog meet. Trouble is I think a large number of July/August weekends are already booked (and with kids it is hard to say exactly what I’ll be doing). 23rd August is the only one that is definately out atm, but mark me down as interested. We’re making the most of August because my wife re-starts work in September.
Stuart Langridge:
Hey, cool. I like the sound of this. I’m on holiday the first full week in August, which rules out the first two weekends, but other than that I think I’m entirely available. Besides, at some point I have to meet all these interesting people. :-)
sarah:
oh, it *so* wants to be the last weekend in August. Not only will my bizarre job have finished, I’ll have a full bank account and actually be in the South-east.
ooo go on, please, I’ve always wanted to go to one of these.
Natalie:
I’m in two minds about this. I kind of want to come along, to catch up with people like you, Paul and Stuart L. But I’ve no idea who the rest of the UK bloggers are, and likewise, nobody’ll have any idea who I am, so that’d be rather intimidating….
I’m free apart from the first weekend in August, amn’t overly in love with the idea of London as I’d have to either pay for a hotel or beg crashspace (not sure if I know anyone in London anymore!), and if it does go ahead, how about someone setting up a page somewhere that people can post a brief introduction of themselves with a link to their page, so I don’t feel like a wallflower?
Apart from all that, great idea ;)
Gert:
Prior to the big meet in Feb, I behaved like a shy nervous person and commented that I was in two minds about going, because I wouldn’t know who anybody was. Mo Morgan sent me his mobile number and Meg Pickard set up a page where people could post photos of themselves. The fact that various people were declaring their intention to go and Owen Bloing was compiling a list meant that everybody had a chance to glance at the sites that they didn’t know. I’m sure such a thing could happen again very easily and I hope that people who started attending blogmeets this year will follow the example of old old timers and be welcoming to newcomers.
In th ened, if one is bored/uncomfortable etc, one always has the option of walking away. which is why it wouldn’t be a good idea to hold a blogmeet on a river boat or in a prison or some such place.
Mr.D.:
Being a non-Blogger, could I just turn up and comment about the blogmeet?
Oh, no, sorry, I’ll probably be in Hawaii for the old 5-0 gloat.
D:
Don’t you wish now you’d just set a date?
Andrew:
Assuming you’re even letting newbie bloggers in on the party, then I’ll stick my hand in the air and nod in agreement to just about anything.
In other words, I don’t really have any plans this summer. Apart from Edinburgh FEstival, mayhaps…
sasha:
I’d love to come! Can I make a plea for NOT a Friday night… I’ve not made the last couple because I don’t go out on Fridays. Can’t do Sat 12th, but could do Sun 13th.. But could do 19/26 July.
Graybp:
I remember when it were all fields around here, and when we had a mlogbeet, as we wittily called them back then, both of us would turn up and get pissed. Aye.
Seriously, I’d love to catch up with everyone and meet a few new faces. Faces that is. Not faeces. Because that would be unpleasant.
But my diary is very full, what with the baby business and all. It needs its nappy changed frequently.
So I’ll try and get along if I can. If I can’t, I’ll send a pre-recorded announcement instead.
Graybo:
I am, of course, Graybo. Not Graybp. Which is a good thing, as Graybp is hard to say. Unless you’re Polish.
Vaughan:
Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m beginning to feel like an outcast with a pathetic social life simply because I can make more weekends than I can’t make. I hope you will all take pity on me. :-)
Nigel:
This could be very, very scary for a Blogmeet Virgin like me – but I’d like to drop along, if that’s OK, and as long as everyone promises not to take too seriously anything I say after the fourth Stella. Anytime in August would be fine by me, altho’ I might be able to do a July too.
quin:
sounds interesting. count me in (though first weekend in september may be difficult: birthday/hangover/blauurgh/unable to move for 12 hours etc.)
Anna:
Ack. Would love to see some of the old faces again. Can do anything after July 19th, for about three weeks. Then am not in London.
