MP3 of the Week
Aquarion And The Start Of The Grand Tradition
So, a new thing for a new week then, and the start of a grand tradition whereby I introduce you to tracks you never ever would have even have considered listening to. In this case, you probably shouldn't, but you will anyway, because you should be too intriged not to.
The first track is an offical, chartered, _disco remix_ of the Star Wars soundtrack medly, and this is what it is from:
The Star Wars Holiday Special
(Nov 17,1978) The most infamous 2 hours of Star Wars programming ever to grace television sets! This show was so bad that it was never re-aired or released to video, and has become a cult classic among Star Wars fans.
The story surrounds Chewbacca's family preparing for Life Day back on their home planet. The show features all of the major cast members from the movie(Luke, Leia, Han, R2 & C-3PO & Vader). Carrie Fisher even makes an attempt at singing! It's so bad that it is fun to watch! Also features Art Carney, Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Diahann Carroll and the Jefferson Starship. The show is most noted for the 1st appearence of Boba Fett and the Holiday Special Cartoon. The program even included a classic Kenner Star Wars toy commercial with R2D2 & C3PO.
From TimewarpTV's page
George Lucas [...] did once state in an interview that he wishes he could track down and destroy every last copy of the Holiday Special, which isn't that great a condemnation of the special itself, considering this is the same man who wants to track down and destroy every last copy of the original version of Star Wars before he added all the digital effects, extra jawas, and made Greedo shoot first.
From Teleport City's page
The holiday special is what happens when an exec at Lucasfilm decides to do a Holiday Special. Lucas hates it, it's available on E-Bay, and one of the best things to come out of it was the remixed sound-track, which (while not containing Carrie Fisher singing the lyrics (There are lyrics?!) to the Star Wars theme) does contain a funky remix of it.
The MotW files will only be available until the following MotW is launched, so if this post is over a week old, you're out of luck.

MP3OTW - Milla Jovavich
This week, I bring you someone you may have heard of, but probably didn’t know was a singer. This person is Milla Jovavich.
Milla is probably most famous for being “Leeloo Minai Lekarariba-Laminai-Tchai Ekbat De Sebat” in the the movie ‘The Fifth Element’ (She’s the star that isn’t Bruce Willis) and the Red-Dressed heroine “Alice” in the so-so action violence very-very-video-game movie ‘Resident Evil’ (To which a sequal ‘RE: Apocalypse’ is in pre-production right now)
She’s also a singer. She has a couple of albums out, but I tripped over her when searching Audiogalaxy for obscure Divine Comedy tracks because her first album is called ‘Divine Comedy’. Anyway, This is my favourite track of hers that I own. It’s called “The Gentlemen who fell” and is this weeks’ Aquarionics.com MP3 of the Week.
Those who spoke on this:
isihac:
Um, yes.
I’m sorry, but all I could do was wonder when the word ‘bigbadaboom’ was going to appear.
Time for recovery via Little Shop of Horrors, methinks.
MP3OTW - Summertime
Due to overwhelming lack of public demand, MP3 Of The Week is back. This week it’s too damn hot to make any real selection, and because I can’t find “Too Damn Hot” in my collection, you get the rockenist version of “Summertime (And the living is easy)” this side of The Beermonsters, covered by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
(FIle Gone)

Mp3OTW - The Bricklayer's Lament
This is funny. Listen carefully. It’s by the Corries
Go Get It Deleted 2003-08-31, Too late, folks
MP3otW - Misirlou

You know the music from Pulp Fiction? The guitar thing? Then you probably know it's called Misirlou, and is one of the most covered pieces in the world.
Here it is, with electric guitars and bagpipes.
Those who spoke on this:
Cathy:
My God – that’s another one of my life’s ambitions fulfilled! I’ve already found a piece of accordion music that I like (various from the Léon soundtrack), and I’d have thought it was pushing my luck to come across a decent piece of bagpipes music as well…
andy:
hi cathy,
just found this site, ime learning to play the electric guitar, and when i heard misirlou i just have to learn to play it. however, i cannot find any tableture sites anywhere, i know it sounds cheeky to ask but any ideas? thanks for your time andy.Fuzzy:
Arg! Can anyone find this Off Kilter mp3 of Miserlou?
There is no such thing as a mirror that makes chocolate biscuits

In our neverending quest to being you the weird, the strange, the B-Sides and the just plain odd, we have brought you Disco remixes of Star Wars, Bagpipe music with electric guitars, and the signing talents of movie stars.
Thus, it's with great pleasure, we bring you the biggest star of them all, with a tartan cap, remixed for the new generation.
Those who spoke on this:
AdrianO:
Aarrgh! Deeply evil, deeply disturbing, and brimming over with wrongability! Make it Stop!
Bad Fishtank!
Deadant

Lack of imagination this week, but two of them to make up for it. Both are versions of the infamous Pink Panther Themetune by Henry Mancini.
Music to collect magic mushrooms to
So, what’s the most twisted remix we could put up here? The garage remix of the Ski Sunday theme? 187 Lockdown? Smooth Criminal (Michael Jackson remixed with Alien Ant Farm version)
Nope.
I’d say it was, fairly conclusivly, Nine Inch Nails – Closer
I probably should apologise for this.
Those who spoke on this:
ben:
ive got a good 1 for u- Dr. Hook – You make my pants.
you have to hear it to believe it…
Marco:
Yes, you damn well should apologise!
Eminently evil.
Music
Recovered from cold.
Will start back on actual content in November.
10 entries in a month not good.
Full sentances also not good.
Recreated version of The Divine Comedy’s track “The Booklovers” as filked to 80’s kids TV shows.
Those who spoke on this:
emma:
Yes you must. I’m bored as hell and your blog is usually quite entertaining to read.
Play On
If music be the food of love, here we have sprouts marinated in marmite.
I present, for your delectation and possible fear, The video of Lenoard Nimoy’s classic single: ‘The Ballard of Bilbo Baggins’
(Requires Quicktime)
On the first day of christmas
So, the first in this series of christmassy MP3s leading up to christmas is:
Music to max your visa to
And second in our countdown of Christmas Music you may not yet have heard:
More Christmas Music
To make up for yesterday’s lack:
- Barenaked Ladies Carol Medley
- Dar Williams, The Christian’s Verses the Pagans – Live (Thanks to AdrianO for pointing me at this)
Those who spoke on this:
AdrianO:
Yay, glad you liked it. I’ll play you the studio version sometime; “Mortal City” is one of those albums everyone should hear. Just as soon as Añejo returns my copy. :-)
Sounds Delightful
Upon the new bronze statue of Mick Jagger there is a plaque that reads: ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone’.
And, in more seasonal entertainment this Christmas Eve’s Eve:
And, in less festive, but still great, music:
- Funkapella – The Klingon Song (Via Ruthi)
Own reword
MP3 of the $time, first one since christmas. It’s been up a while, but I don’t think I originally announced it here.
Banjo Music
It’s back, and more evil than ever before. This week, we present:
Carmina Burana played on a banjo
(Okay, so the graphic should be “ogg of the week” but never mind)
Those who spoke on this:
dearg:
Hmm, you’re evil, but this is remarkably good for banjoes…
MOTW - My Big Fat Starship
This week’s (Actually, something like January 16th’s) entry for the increasingly inaccuratly named “MP3 of the week” is:
My Big Fat Starship (Lyrics) by Zong of the week
The engine’s powered by confusion
When it clogs, all the windows steam up
We’ve got a great big five-year mission
To see worlds we could never dream up
I’ll be singing this for weeks…
MP3otW - Kings Singers
In 1978, the BBC changed the frequencies of its radio stations.
The Kings Singers do the announcement
(From CTony)
Those who spoke on this:
Nick:
Your post kind-of implies that the King’s singers actually did the announcement, which I agree would have been cool but as far as I know didn’t actually happen.
It used to be a fair tradition among a certain kind of close-harmony group to take boring announcements, etc. and sing them in harmony. It was parodied by Stilgoe and Skellern; can’t find their song online, so here are the lyrics:
Many groups who sing in harmony
find it amusing to take the weather forecast
the highway code
or the VAT regulations
or the instructions for assembling and using a Japanese home barbecue
and sing them in the form of a song.
But we’re not going to do that.
(Sung in close harmony, obviously.)
Lost in the music
Today, I was on the train.
This is not an extraordinary thing, really. I spend between an hour and two hours on trains every week day (depending on which trains I manage to catch). I was using my laptop (Well, work’s laptop) as an MP3 player (Tell laptop not to shut down when the lid closes, turn on iTunes, put laptop in backpack with headphones plugged in, listen, occasionally wishing I could access iTunes with bluetooth so I could do “Next Track” from my phone) and prance merrily on my way.
Except I was on a train, so I was coding (work, regretably. I need to finish this project before I leave) whilst listening to the music, so I nearly didn’t notice that we were passing Hitchin, so I had a few minutes to pack up before we hit Letchworth – my stop.
At this point, for the first time in my history of commuting to and from London, the ticket inspecter tried to make his way down a packed commuter train.
Normally they know better than this, since all the trains from four ‘til six have people sitting in the aisles. This one didn’t, so a couple of minutes fumbling for the ticket and photocard, and we were pulling into Letchworth. Panic!
Shut laptop, shove in bag, get coat, put in earphones, stand up. And the earphones. Come out. Of the Socket meaning that the laptop plays the current track on full volume. Said track happens to be Liposuction by Da Vinci’s Notebook. Not ideal for saving face in a commutor environment. This would have been better if I hadn’t accidentally done that another twice. Argh.
So, in conclusion half a train full of commuters I’ll see every day for the next month or so now think I’m a fool. Still, could have been worse
But the MP3 of the week is neither of those. It’s a band I can find no mention of anywhere on the InterWeb, which is kinda freaky as I have to assume they don’t really exist. So, to introduce you to these people, who are good, the Little Screaming Pilgrims, Better Sideburns
Same deal as ever, they’ll be gone next week.
Mailbox, lets get the baby high
A song for you. It’s called Let’s Get the Baby High and it’s by Mailbox. And we shall learn more of their wisdom later.
Merry
It’s half past ten. The Christmas dinner was a qualified success (A couple of things were a little overdone) and my new breadmaker is quietly cooling in the background. The Christmas pudding was set alight, and was gorgeous.
I have both port and stilton, new games to play, book to read (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell). In a couple of days we will be invaded by parents & possibly even siblings (who I haven’t seen since May), and a couple of days after that I’ll wander up to spend New Years with friends.
I don’t post enough when stuff is good and I’m not stressing, so consider this a “Life is good” post.
And, as a Christmas gift from my MP3 collection to you lot, a piece of festive family fun.
Happy holidays.
Underground
My birthday present to you. May contrain traces of the word “Fuck”:
Messup
So, what happens if you mix The Beatles – Come Together with the Nine Inch Nails – Closer?
Those who spoke on this:
More Tunes
(Yeah, I’m trying to make up for three months of lack of content in a week, Sosumi)
Another MP3 of the $TIMEPERIOD, this time from… someplace.
(from Spiderman, The Album)
Raggy Dolls
Did you know that the theme from Raggy Dolls was composed and sung by Neil Innes of the Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band?
Um
So, I present without comment, this time period’s MP3OTW:
Those who spoke on this:
Rory Parle:
No comment is about all you could say about that, I think. Oh, except, obviously someone is insane. Thank God it’s them instead of you.
Get better elections!
Once again, we have entered the realms of a General Election. I’ve been trying to sort an article in my head on my thoughts on the current block of politicos, and have given up for the time being. Instead, a summary, by the Bonzos.
Mashed

For various reasons, none of which I’m going to explain here.
The MP3 of the whatever.

Play On
I’ve been lax in the MP3 of the week thing, so:
Talk like a pirate day
So, I’m sat here at work, and it’s Talk Like Pirate Day. So I’m going to do what I did last time I mentioned it.
The Pirate Training Day sketch
Which is _my_ MP3, despite the fact that someone called “Steve” posted it to Boing Boing last month. Which I didn’t notice, because I don’t read it.
Traces of politics
From the Capitol Steps, to the tune of the Beach Boys’ ‘Kokomo’:
Cursed
The mp3 of the introduction to Monkey Island III

There is another music clip associated with the show…not sure if it is an intro, ending or what…any help in places to search would be deeply appreciated.
Regards.
Jimbo:
This theme song is an “ear worm.”
I don’t watch HUSTLE, but fell asleep while watching television, and the end of HUSTLE was on…the theme song played, and I believe this Indian guy was dancing to it…
I can NOT get this song out of my head!!!!!!

I’ve just managed to get hold of a copy of the episode. I’m scared to watch it.
Kevin:
Next you’ll be telling us you didn’t realise there were lyrics to the Star Trek theme tune! Nichelle Nichols (yes I had to look it up) at her finest there.
I am possibly enjoying this disco Star Wars a little too much though. Save me!
mike:
Oh! I remember this – credited to Meco it was actually a UK chart hit, and reached #1 in the US singles charts I think. Never heard the full 6 and a half minute version before though…nice! Thanks!
